The North West Leicestershire Society of Model Engineers (NWLSME) was formed in 1973. The original track site was the Miners Welfare centre in Coalvile. The original track was raised catering for 5, 3 1/2 and 2 1/2 inch gauges.
The club was forced to move in the late 1980 due to demise of the local coal industry and the inveitable closure of the Welfare Centre.
Luckily, the local authority agreed to provide an area of land at the Hermitage Leisure Centre in nearby Whitwick.
The club moved to the new site in 1989/90. The site required completley renovating as it's previous use was a brick yard - you can imagine what is was like!
After much sweat from the club members the new site was completed in 1992 with a raised track 1270' in length for 5, 3 1/2 and 2 1/2 inch locomotives. More recently, a 5 inch gauge ground-level track of approximaely 1700' in length has been created.
The site has plenty of space for traction engines and other non-railway activities.
Club membership is 100+ and this has remained steady for several years.
